Skydiving is more popular now than ever before. With the advent of social media, movies, and indoor skydiving, the sport of skydiving has grown exponentially.

Now, we might be a little biased here, but we think that skydiving is the greatest thing in the world! Here, we’ll explore why so many more people are agreeing with us…

TAKING IT TO THE BIG SCREEN

It’s not unusual for movies to generate interest in new things. Fast and Furious saw a resurgence in interest in fast cars. Top Gun got us all back down to the beach to play volleyball ‘with the boys’. And we can’t begin to imagine how many people descended upon pottery studios after Ghost!

Skydiving is one sport that has benefitted from big screen appearances. Point Break back in the 1990s (and again recently) showed us that skydiving was cool! Terminal Velocity featured Charlie Sheen as a dare devil skydiver whose skills helped him in all sorts of shenanigans. When James Bond went skydiving in Thunderball, people realized that even the most refined of British spies knew how to have a good time!

In more recent times, Bridget Jones has taken the leap and Kingsmen pushed the understanding of parachuting and high altitude jumps.

All of this has helped to make skydiving ‘normal’. It is no longer reserved for ‘crazy adrenaline junkies’, but viewed as something that a lot of people do and therefore not really out of reach for anyone.

BRINGING IT INDOORS

One of the big things that hold people back from making their first skydive is the idea of jumping out of an airplane.

“Who jumps out of a perfectly good airplane?” people ask us.

“We do!”, we tell them!

Now, we get that making that jump can be pretty scary. Here at Skydive Coastal Carolinas, our staff are highly experienced and have made thousands of skydives. But when it’s your first time, it’s an unknown and that takes a lot to get over.

Indoor skydiving has been a huge contributor to the growing popularity of skydiving because people don’t have to jump out of an airplane. Instead, they enter the wind chamber through a door by simply stepping in. To exit, they step out again (none of that potentially scary parachute ride either).

Indoor skydiving is a sport in itself these days. Outdoor skydivers use it as somewhere to train and they also compete in indoor skydiving competitions around the world. Loads of people try skydiving indoors before going outdoors. There are even people who’ve never jumped out of an airplane but who love to fly inside.

We reckon it’s well worth trying – but indoor skydiving can never replace the feeling of outdoor jumping.

SOCIAL MEDIA BRINGS SKYDIVING TO THE MASSES

It used to be that the only press coverage skydiving got was negative. It’s true that there are incidents that happen in skydiving but these are few and far between. It’s far more likely that we jump without incident and have a great time in the process!

Since social media has taken off, it’s made it possible for people who love and enjoy skydiving to talk about that and share their experiences.

Find us on Twitter and Facebook to see awesome photos and videos of awesome skydivers doing awesome things!

PEOPLE LOVE IT NOW, BUT THEY DIDN’T ALWAYS…

The early days of skydiving weren’t quite as rosy as they are now! The idea that man could fly had its skeptics, mainly due to the fact that no one could understand how it could be possible.

That meant people like poor old Leonardo Di Vinci (who drew his prototype parachute in 1485) took a lot of stick for the craziness of their ideas. People, flying? Surely not!

Even once people started skydiving in the 1900s, civilian jumping was considered an ‘outcast’ sport and ‘reckless’. It’s taken a long time (and a lot of jumps) to get us to where we are today, where skydiving is a pretty mainstream sport, enjoyed by thousands of people around the world.
