Many people think skydiving is an extreme activity that’s meant to be completed just once in a lifetime. Yet, so many people keep coming back to jump over and over again. Why? Because skydiving makes people feel alive — and who doesn’t want to feel alive?

The health benefits of skydiving far outweigh the risks and costs. As an experienced jumper, skydiving is as meditative as it is exhilarating and challenging. For a first-time jumper, skydiving is as fun as it is scary because you’re leapfrogging the boundaries of your comfort zone.

At its core, skydiving is a release. It impacts each person in their own unique way. While it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is about skydiving that makes us feel so alive — we could probably write an entire book about it — we’ve boiled it down to at least these first three.

FACING YOUR FEARS

Many people who come to skydiving to do because they’re afraid of heights and want to conquer that fear. Even if you don’t have an obvious fear that skydiving would trigger, however, you’re still voluntarily throwing yourself out of a perfectly good airplane. It’s scary! No matter how you slice it, you’re tackling a fear when you come jump for the first time. Licensed skydivers break down barriers and defeat fears on an ongoing basis as they continue to progress.

It’s an amazing feeling when you realize that you can do all the things in life that once scared you and held you back. Skydiving makes you feel superhuman in a sense. It boosts your confidence. And that can be applied across your life.

REJUVENATION

Believe it or not, many people find skydiving meditative. That’s because you are forced to only think about that exact task in that exact moment — nothing else matters and everything else is pushed to the side. This, along with the basic fact that you’re pushing beyond your comfort zone, can make skydiving a rejuvenating mental and physical task.

Think about the relaxation that you may feel after an hour of sit-down meditation, yoga, or a run. Skydiving similarly washes over you with a sense of accomplishment and of being.

STRESS RELIEF

You may feel your heart speed up at certain times before and during the skydive as your adrenaline kicks in, but that’s a healthy and natural reaction. It’s building up to be released during the skydive, and when it does, your stress seems to melt away.

Psychologists believe that the inclination to try high-risk activities is essential for the continuation of the human species because it ensures that we are padding our flight-or-flight survival instincts and maintaining a sharp body and mind.

As you skydive, every other stress trigger in your life melts away. For 60 seconds of freefall and another five or so minutes under canopy, nothing else matters. That cleanses your mind and body and reminds you to live.
